Dr. Julia Carson-Thomas
DVM — Veterinarian
Dr. Julia Carson-Thomas is a native of Marion County who grew up showing cattle and horses in local 4-H and FFA programs. She would shadow and talk to any vet that would give her the time, including our own Dr. Dennis Moore. She attended WVU, where she majored in Animal and Pre-Veterinary Science. After graduation, she attended The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon completion of her DVM in 2002, she began working for a mixed animal practice in Ohio before moving back to southern WV and opening her own practice. She owned and worked at her own overnight small animal ER practice in Virginia for 9.5 years. After selling her practice, Dr. Carson decided to move back north with her two daughters and husband, as well as their many animals, large and small, and everything in between. She ended up settling down within 4 miles of her family farm. She began working here at Fairmont Veterinary Hospital as mostly an ER and Urgent Care veterinarian. Now, she works in all aspects of our practice, performing surgeries as well as wellness and medical visits. What she enjoys the most is the variety of cases she sees, working with geriatric patients, and mentoring young veterinary technicians and veterinary students.
Dr. Carson resides on a small hobby farm on the outskirts of Mannington with her three daughters and husband. They are all extremely active in the local 4H and FFA programs and show cattle, hogs, goats, and, most recently, lambs. Her husband is retired and holds down the fort at home. On their farm, they have: four dogs: Bubba, Tractor, Skittles, and Frog, four cats: Mackeral, LB, Gator, and Cheetah, two rabbits: Thumper and Muchacha, 25+ chickens, three turkeys: Peter, Paul, and Mary, and three horses: 60, Jitterbug, and Barron. In her very limited free time, Dr. Carson enjoys gardening and working with the Mannington Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Dr. Barbara Hurst
DVM — Veterinarian
Dr. Barbara Hurst is an associate veterinarian who joined our hospital in 2022. Dr. Hurst grew up in Weston, WV, where she still resides with her husband and children. Growing up, she always loved animals. She decided to combine her love of medicine, animals, and people into a career by becoming a veterinarian. She attended Alderson Broaddus College, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2006. Dr. Hurst received her degree in veterinary medicine in 2011 from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville. After years of serving our state as a small animal veterinarian and veterinary technology instructor, she began doing relief work for our hospital in 2022. She became a full-time veterinarian at our hospital in 2023.
Dr. Hurst has a special interest in preventative medicine as well as animal behavior and dermatology. In her spare time, she loves traveling, spending time with her family, camping, and playing with her two dogs, Papi and Annie.
Dr. Gabriella Mascaro
MRCVS — Veterinarian
Dr. Gabriella Mascaro, MRCVS (Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons), is excited to be returning to her hometown and working again with Fairmont Veterinary Hospital. She graduated from Fairmont State University with a degree in Biology-Chemistry. She recently graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in London, England. Dr. Mascaro began working here as a veterinary assistant, and we are very excited to have her back on our staff as a veterinarian. She has a border collie named Kato, who she has traveled the world with (he is a BIG hit with international flight crews). She has worked with lions, elephants, baboons, zebras, and klipspringers in Zimbabwe, with elephants in Thailand, and with coral reefs and sea turtles in the Caribbean. She is always looking for the next adventure in veterinary medicine. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, camping, anything to do with charcuterie, and spending time with her grandparents.
Dr. Megan Haller
DVM — Veterinarian
Dr Megan Haller has wanted to be a veterinarian since she was about 5 years old. She chose this field because of her love for animals, science, and medicine. Within veterinary medicine, her passion lies in surgery, encompassing both soft tissue and orthopedic procedures.
She received a Bachelor’s in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Fairmont State University in 2020 and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2024.
She began at FVH as a kennel tech in 2018 and worked as a vet assistant through school. She started as an associate veterinarian in July 2024. At home, she has one pet, a yellow English Labrador Retriever named Lincoln. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with Lincoln, floating the river on a bass boat, and traveling with her husband, Tanner.
